(760) was born on 23 Aug 1844 in Stark Co., OH.
Salamis was the only name known of seven children. His younger years were spent
in Findlay and Carey, Ohio. He enrolled in Company A., 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry
for three years then re-enrolled in the same company for the duration of the
war. He served as corporal, and was honorably discharged at Columbus, Ohio in
1865. He participated in the battles of Shiloh, Stone River, Chickamouga, Mission
Ridge, and Atlanta campaign, Nashville, Tennessee, and New Hope Church. At the
battle of Stone River, 31 DEC 1862, he was severely wounded and captured, being
later taken to Richmond, and held in prison for 69 days. He was again wounded
in the battle of Nashville. After the war he bought land and began truck farming,
supplying the towns of Findlay, Carey, and Fostoria with garden produce. He was
a member of the school board. He was known for his ingenuity in mechanics. He
was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, being a trustee and past
grand master of the order, a member of the Methodist Church, and an uncompromising
Republican though independent in local elections.
He was married to Lucretia SOUTHERLAND in 1883. |
