ELEVENTH GENERATION

937. Julia Ann BAKER (5228) (5229)(760) was born on 25 Mar 1811 in New Jersey.(5230) She died on 9 Aug 1877 in Wisconsin.(5231)

In records from Wisconsin Historical Society, they list a Mrs. Julia Ann SLAGHT whose father is John BAKER and mother Mary BAKER to have married a John CLEGG born in Pennsylvania of James and Ann CLEGG on 24 Nov. 1867 by a justice of the peace. John was a farmer in Beetown.

Julia Ann BAKER SLAGHT, is listed as head of household in the 1850 Wisconsin Federal Census for Grant County. She too, as with her father, was residing in District 24. This census states that she was born in New Jersey and that her first two children, Sarah and John were born in the same state in 1834 and 1836. The family then moved to Michigan where a child was born, then to LaPorte County, Indiana where the family is listed under John L. SLAGHT, and another child is born. By 1842 the family is in Illinois where in this year Henry C. is born and two more sisters are born in 1846 and 1848. John died on 3 Apr. 1848 either in Illinois or probably in Wisconsin.

Julia Ann received land from her father, John H. BAKER. This sale is recorded in Book O. The sale took place on 2 Oct 1849 and was recorded two days later. The price for about a half acre was $25.00. Also on the same day she bought land from her brother-in-law, George W. HARGER, of 40 acres for $280.00.

With Julia Ann's family living in Wisconsin, it is not surprising that she then moves there to raise her family.

In 1856 Julia married for the second time to Jarius HARGER of Muscatine County, IA. on 10 Aug. Probably how this couple met is from her younger sister Clarissa who married Jarius's younger brother George Washington HARGER. Thus, the HARGER and SLAGHT families were combined under 1 roof.

In the land deeds Catherine SLAGHT, widow of John B. SLAGHT, deceased of Grant City, Wis. sold land to Frank Jacob SLAGHT on 26 Jan 1884 in Book 100. A few weeks earlier John Herbert SLAGHT sold land to Frank J. SLAGHT for a $1000.00. This deed in Book 99 reads;
"John H. SLAGHT & Ellen SLAGHT, his wife said John H. SLAGHT being an heir at law of John B. SLAGHT, deceased, his father sold to F.J. SLAGHT ... Subject to right of dower of the widow of John B. SLAGHT, deceased."

Julia Ann died on 9 Aug 1877. She is buried next to John CLEGG, her third husband, whom she married on 24 Nov. 1867 at Beetown. Her tombstone is broken and the elements have nearly erased the dates away. She may have died in 1870, for she isn't listed with CLEGG in the 1870 Wisconsin Census.

According to GLOVERlover family records her name was Juliana. Her birth date could have been 1811

Sometime between 1850 and 1856 wife Elizabeth died. Met Julia Ann BAKER SLAGHT who was widowed between 1848 and 1850 . Each had seven children to raise. Jarias's brother George and his wife Clarrissa lived in the town of Tafton, where he met Julia. They married 10 Aug 1856. What became of the 40 acres Julia filed for in 1855?

The HARGER's then moved around Iowa up and down the Mississippi River. Finally settled in Lee County.

The SLAGHT's and HARGERs must have had a close family, for on 1 Sept. 1864, Matilda HARGER married her step-brother Henry Clay SLAGHT. The newlyweds made their home at Beetown, Grant Co. Wi.

Only one HARGER family is found in the 1850 Iowa census and it is Jarius (or Jarias) HARGER. Jarias moved from Indiana sometime between 1836 and 1842. His wife gives birth to twins, Matilda and Melinda, on 22 September 1842 in Muscatine Co. Ia. Jarias has his name spelled as Jarius and James in other places including one family bible.

Jarias and Elizabeth WICKERSHAM married about 1829 in Parke Co. IN. She died between the 1850 IA census and 1856. Jarias married a second time to Julia Ann BAKER SLAGHT on 10 Aug. 1856. Jarias and Elizabeth had 7 children.

We don't know how Jarias and Julia met. She had been a widow since 1848 when her husband John SLAGHT died. Her sister Clarrissa was married to Jarias's brother George so possibly they met when Jarias might have come for a visit. Julia had 7 children also. The new HARGER family moved around IA up and down the Mississippi River. Finally they settled in Lee Co. On the 1860 census for Grant Co. WI 3 of Julia's children were living with their oldest sister Sarah ELTON and her husband in Beetown,. WI.

Julia and Jarias probably were divorced before 1867 because she married a third time to John CLEGG and was his third wife on 24 Nov. 1867 at Beetown, Grant Co, WI.

Jarias married 3rd time to Sarah SAYLE, Territory of Nebraska, Nemaha Co.

Jarias ended up moving and settling in Smith Co. KS. He is buried in the Pleasant Plains Cemetery in Smith Co. Died spring of 1880. A cousin found on microfiche at the LDS FHC: HARGES, Jarvis, Smith Co., KS, 72 male, Apr. NY, pneumonia, 01, 1880
