Joseph attended Zion academy until his mother died and he went to live with his sister, Elizabeth, at Havre de Grace, MD. After he married Jamesanna they settled in Cecil County where Joseph became a tenant farmer. About 1900, the family moved to Elkton where Joseph worked as a carpenter at Landing Lane Boat Yard. About 1904, Joseph bought a 36 acre farm near Leeds, MD., where the family lived until "Minnie's" death. Joseph's family was closely affiliated with the Methodist Church at Leeds where some of his descendants are to this day members of the congregation.

He was married to Jamesanna POWELL on 22 Mar 1898 in Havre de Grace, Harford Co., MD. Jamesanna POWELL ^(10326)(760) was born on 24 Feb 1879. She died on 14 Apr 1943.
