Nancy was three weeks old when her mother died and a family named Keeling reared her. This family soon secretly moved away out of fear that Nancy's father, George Summa, would reclaim her. Nancy lived with the Keelings until her marriage at 28 years of age. In later years, she sought out her Summa relatives in Indiana and visited them.
