History of the library

Bowlby Public Library, located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, began
in 1943 as the Nellie Donley Children's Library and was located at the
First Methodist Church on Richhill Street then moved to the second
floor rooms over the First Federal Savings and Loans Bank on High
Street. In 1958, the library moved to the Bowlby Home. In 1967,
service was expanded to include adult materials and it became the Eva
K. Bowlby Public Library named in honor of it's benefactress. In April
of 1986, construction of an addition to the original Bowlby structure
was begun. Construction and the move from the original quarters to the
new were complete the following year. An open house on May 3, 1987
marked the formal occupation of the new addition.

An email message from the Library itself states:

This is written on the placque in our entrance room:

The Children's Library Association Chartered February 4, 1946
A Testamentary memorial of Eva K. Bowlby 1864-1957
To
Carhart H. Bowlby
And
Ray Bowlby Connor 1926-1932"

On August 16, 1957, the library trustees and the public learned that
the late Mrs. Carhart H. Bowlby in her will had bequeathed to the
Children's Library Association the use of her home and property on
North Richhill Street so long as it continued to maintain a children's
library. The will provided toward the growth of the library and
toward maintenance and upkeep the net income from a large block of
stock in the Universal Cyclops Steel Corporation. The bequest was to
be a memorial to Mrs. Bowlby's late husband, Carhart H. Bowlby, and a
deceased grandson, Ray Bowlby Conner.
