He was also mentioned in Daniel Bowlby's will. Daniel was his paternal grandfather.

He was married to Mary Frances WALKER on 23 May 1866.^{(11641) (11642) (11643)} They were married by the Rev. John Scott Presbyterian Church Whitnesses Alfred Walker and Eliza Sinclair. Family tradition has it that John changed the spelling of his surname to "Bolsby" to differentiate his family from other Bowlby's. Being reared as a stepson in his father's house may have influenced this decision.
