198. George BOULBY (29)(6) (7)(8) was born on 27 Oct 1773 in Ackworth, Moor Top, Yorkshire, England. (1263)(1264) He was christened on 19 Dec 1773 in Ackworth, Moor Top, Yorkshire, England. (1265) He died on 14 Apr 1821 in Leeds. (1266)(1267) He was buried on 14 Apr 1821 in Ackworth, Moor Top, Yorkshire, England. (1268)(1269) Ackworth Baptisms Ann Boulby d/o George & Elizabeth Boulby of Moor Top, labourer

carved mother's headstone (wrong date on it)

There is a baptism 2 June 1790 at Ebenezer St. Baptist which could be George 16 years of age as Baptist are christened as adults.

George carved a sundial that contained a regular geometrical solid with 20 faces. Each face is an equilateral triangle marked with the name of the city and the hours of the day. Because of the shape of the stone, each of the twenty sun-dials needed different time markings. The ten pairs of faces show the time at cities around the world in time zones 36 degrees of longitude apart. When the stone was set on its pedestal and aligned with a compass it remained only to fit the 20 bronze gnomons which cast the shadows to enable the sundials to function. Carved deeply on one of the faces is "G. Boulby Fect. 18 3" The whole work stands about seven feet high.

George 40 married Elizabeth Durrans 27 (who was his brother Thomas' step-daughter).

George died in Leeds but is buried at Ackworth. At the time he was listed in Baines Directory for Leeds as ''Geo Boulby, sundial manufacturer, Top of St. Peter's Square''. There are other sundials carved by George. An article for George's work can be found at: http://www3.shore.net/~katzman/gboulbysundial.htm

George's only son John (1820 died at 21 in 1841) so the Boulby name of this line ends.

He was married to Elizabeth DURRANS (daughter of Susannah CUNNINGHAM) on 1 Mar 1813 in Ackworth, St.Cuthbert. (1270)(1271) Elizabeth DURRANS(29) (5)(6) (7)(8) was born in 1786 in Dewsbury.(1272) It appears that Elizabeth's step father was her husband's elder brother, Thomas Boulby. She was christened on 7 May 1786 in Dewsbery. (1273) She died in 1861.(1274) She was buried on 3 Feb 1861 in St. Pauls, Alverthorpe. (1275) 1851 census Alverthorpe
