According to Raymond Edwin Bowlby:

The 1880 census of Seventy-six Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, lists
his family under T. J. Bolsby. He and his wife lived there with four
children: a son whose name is not legible; Elsie; Grace whose given
name was Iva Grace; and Ellen who used the name of "Ella." The 1900
census of the same place, indicates that Jefferson Bowlby, aged 48
years, born in Ohio, was married to Clara ______, aged 47 years, born
in Iowa. The census states that they were married nineteen years and
had four children. Catherine CHAPMAN ^{(816)(6) (7)(8)} was born about 1853 in Ohio.⁽⁷⁹¹⁵⁾ Thomas Jefferson BOWLBY and Catherine CHAPMAN had the following children:

Although his given name is not legible in the 1880 census, descendant
researcher Julie (Bowlby) Miller has identified him in an email
exchange 3/2000.
