She was married to Dr. Luther Calvin BOWLBY M.D. (son of Samuel Coleman BOWLBY and Salinda CARTER) on 16 May 1858. (6809)(6810) Their two wills give the names of two sons, Luther Calvin, and William Whitfield, as well as four grandchildren. A grave once recorded as being near the graves of Thomas Bowlby and Sarah (Cowell) recorded a third son, Henry Carter Bowlby. Dr. Luther Calvin BOWLBY M.D.(6811) (6812) (816)(6) (6813)(6814) (807)(808) (7)(8) was born on 9 Aug 1833. (6815)(6816) (6817) He died on 15 Oct 1874. (6818)(6819) He was buried in Hackettstown Cemetery, New Jersey. (6808) Entries in Snell's history of Warren County, New Jersey, indicate that L.C. or Luther C. Bowlby lived in Greenwich Township and was superintendent of schools there in 1857-8, that he served as physician in the general area of the Musconetcong valley from Finesville 1857 to 1860, but went to Vienna, then served as president of the medical society in Warren County in 1869. Sarah Elizabeth SHIELDS and Dr. Luther Calvin BOWLBY M.D. had the following children:

(6808) She was also known as "Annie". (6826) On 9 May, 1893, she signed as executrix of her grandmother's will and was not married at that time.

Anna kept a small diary labeled, "Deaths in the Family." In it are handwritten notations. Stephen Bowlby has kindly transcribed the information, and it is available in total here, as well as appropriate parts throughout the database.

Sarah E. Shields, wife of Luther C. Bowlby, MD, died March 1, 1918 aged 81 years, 10 months, 13 days.

Samuel C. Bowlby died November 26, 1883 aged 82 years, 3 months, 3 days.

Salinda Bowlby died April 25, 1888 aged 87 years, 2 months, 14 days

Henry C, son of Samuel & Salinda Bowlby, died April 17, 1833 aged 1 year, 8 months, 25 days

W. Whitfield Bowlby, MD died September 11, 1886, aged 50 years, 6 months, 4 days

Jennie, daughter of WW & Elizabeth Bowlby died October 17, 1882 aged 20 years and 7 months

Frank Shileds Bowlby was born January 25th, 1863 and died March 8th, 1920

I, Annie S. Bowlby, was born at Finesville, New Jersey. [This entry is repeated later, as if penmenship was being practiced]

Lynn Calvin Bowlby [Stephen's father] born April 25, 1913

Dorothy May Bowlby born Nov 3, 1916, died April 24th, 1928 aged 11 years

Frank Vernon Bowlby born April 16, 1922


Stephen writes:
There are a few other notation in the book about train tickets and shoes to pickup, a mention of a Fidelity Trust locker, and an address for a Mrs. Williams at 119 Coe Avenue, Hillside and her daughter Mrs. Mamie Lapp.

I have a small hand-drawn card, also by Annie, for the August 24, 1891 Reunion which bears a sketch of a lawn chair beside which is penned the following verse:

Our camp picture must not be overbright
But all in the golden gracious light
Of a cloud, when the summer's sun
Is down.
