EIGHTH GENERATION

153. Edward BOWLSBY (598) (582)(7) (8) died before 1798 in possibly Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. (598) He was born after 1737 - probably 1740s in Hanover Township, Morris County, New Jersey. (598) "Edward made a claim as a loyalist at Shelburne, Nova Scotia, 26 June 1786. His first claim in 1783 had been lost. In his sworn claim, he states that in 1775 he was settled in Morris County, New Jersey, on his own property. In order to gain release from jail, he once signed association papers, but did not know their contents. He joined the British at Hackensack in 1776, but on returning to his family was taken prisoner by Rebels, but made his escape into New York in 1777. He was again taken prisoner in the Jerseys in 1778 and tried for his life but was only flogged. He received 500 lashes and sent to the British lines. Since that time he had remained within British lines.

He came to Shelburne at the evacuation of New York and in 1786 resided in Shelburne County. As evidence of his loss, Edward produced the probate of his father's will dated 27 April 1773. He also produced a certificate for the sale of his confiscated estate that 720 acres had been sold, the property of John and Edward Bowlsby. The following account appeared in NEW YORK GAZETTE and WEEKLY MERCURY, 3 Aug 1778:

"A party of Rebel Light Horse came down as far as Bergen Point last Tuesday night and returned next morning toward Hackensack. They visited Hoeback in their way and carried a great number of cattle from the inhabitants.

"A poor industrious farmer from Morris County in New Jersey named Edward Bowlsby was taken prisoner by the above party, and after being robber by them, they whipped him with rods on the back and shoulders in a most cruel manner and left him for dead."

According to Fred Potter, a descendant of Richard(7), Edward is listed in the index to Loyalist Settlements - 1783-1789, ISBN 0-7743-9890-6. Publisher: MIKA, Bellville, Ontario. It is in the library system. Edward Bowlby is on pg. 149 of the second report.
