According to his loyalist claim in Nova Scotia, Charles lived in Pequanock Township, Morris County, New Jersey. He joined the British troops 5 January 1777 at Pequanock. He owned a farm along the Black River of 137 acres. This was described in his father's will as one-half of 274 acres in Roxbury Township at Fox Hill to be divided between Charles and his brother Richard when of age. An estimate of his losses was 477.00.00 lbs. Charles was in Long Island, New York from 15 July to 22 September 1783, when he embarked for Nova Scotia. By His Majesty's grant of 3 January 1788, Charles received land in Nova Scotia. This 300 acres of land of "Charles Bowlby late of Wilmot in Nova Scotia: was sold 31 March 1799 through his power of attorney.

However, Charles must have died before the sale of this land, because his brother's will of 1799 states he was deceased and provides for his three children. The Will of Thomas Bowlsby implies that Charles was married twice, but gives no clue as to the name of either wife. The will also implies that Charles had more children than those mentioned, but the three children named were "niece, Betsy (eldest daughter of Charles Bowlsby, dec'd, by his first wife)", and "Simeon and George Bowlsby (sons of brother Charles, dec'd."
