John M. Bowlby
Again we are under the shadow. Death has made it so. The grim reaper comes uninvited; he is going up and down the earth seeking whom he may devour; he tears the infant from its mother's arms and leaves her in sorrow; he takes the mother from her loving children and leaves them roam up and down the earth without a mothers care; he breaks the matrimonial cord and leaves the widow to walk alone, yea he snaps the family links, and makes home sorrowful and sad. Last Friday afternoon he called at the home of one of our most aged and respected citizens and took away one from among us in the person of John M. Bowlby who was born in Hocking County, June 19th 1844, and died in the same house in which he was born Sept. 22, 1911, aged 67 years, 3 months ad 3 days.
In the year 1874, he was united in marriage with Miss Lucretia Hayse; to the union six children were born, two son, three daughters and nineteen grand children, but our loss is the eternal gain. About twenty-five years ago he united with the M.E. Church at Webb's Chapel and was happily converted to God, and lived a consistent Christian until death.
In the death of Bro. Bowlby, the community loses one of its good citizens, the church a devout member.
Servant of God well done,
They glorious warfare's past,
The battle's fought, the race is won.
And thou art crowned at last.
Funeral services were conducted by his pastor W.H. Harbel. A large concourse of friends and neighbors gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased, after which his body was laid to rest in the cemetery near by.
