I don't know for sure that James didn't have a middle initial, but none is included in the obits, death certificate, headstone, or anything else I've found. Raymond E. Bowlby does not include it (in his Samuel 8 descendants volume).
Jess checked his sources and couldn't find a source for it. Lacking any source for it, I tend to question including it.
I don't know if it was a mistake that just stuck, or if the source has just been lost, but it's was listed that way in the BFO info before I had any
contact.

: SQUIRE JAMES BOWLBY
: Dies at His Home in Carey Monday Morning, at 6 o'Clock.
: Squire James Bowlby died at his home, in Carey, Monday morning, at 6
: o'clock, from a complication of diseases.
: Mr. Bowlby was born December 8, 1831, in Wayne county, and was in his
: eightysecond year at the time of death. Deceased came to Wynadot county in
: 1853 and lived on a farm, two and one-half miles west of Carey, until 1883,
: since which time he had lived in Carey. He was married January 1, 1857, to
: Amanda Grindle, who departed this life February 22, 1901. Five sons and five
: daughters were born to this union, of whom the following survive: Mrs. Emma
: O'Brien, of Detroit, Mich.; R. D. Bowlby, of Findlay; J. W. Bowlby, of
: Fletcher, Ontario; O. C. Bowlby, of Carey, and N. H. Bowlby, of Cleveland.
: One sister, Mrs. Charles Kurtz, of Neenah, Wis., survives at the age of
: seventysix years.
: Squire Bowlby was a prominent resident of Carey. He served two terms
: as mayor of that city and had been justice of the peace for about thirty
: years, serving in that capacity at the time of his death.
: The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the
: Carey Methodist Episcopal church, conducted by Rev. W. J. Hagerman. Burial
: will be made in the Keller cemetery, on the Ridge.
: [end]
: Sister Mrs. Charles Kurtz is likely Catherine.
: James and Amanda are actually buried in Lutheran Ridge Cemetery, Ridge Twp.,
: Wyandot Co. OH (NW of Carey). I have seen and photographed the monument
: there, which reads:
: JAMES BOWLBY
: 1831-1913
: ----------
: AMANDA, HIS WIFE.
: 1836-1901
: BOWLBY (on base)
: This monument is flanked by smaller stones reading
: FATHER (on the right, and)
: MOTHER (on the left)
: Next to FATHER is a corner of a white marble headstone, which may be what
: remains of the original marker. The markings are illegible, but appear to
: have been y, m, d.
: The large BOWLBY monument is polished gray stone (granite?), as are the
: flanking FATHER and MOTHER stones. They are part of a group surrounded by a
: small raised barrier (looks to be concrete, about 4" high x 4" deep). To the
: left of MOTHER is a white marble headstone sculpted as a scroll, with a
: flower at the top and a bud beneath the inscription
: VIOLETTA A.
: DAU. OF
: J. & A. BOWLBY
: DIED
: APRIL 6, 1876:
: AGED
: 3Y, 7M, 10D.
: There is a poem or quote on the base, which reads, in part:
: (?)
: (?) smiles to us was given,
: (?) bid farewell to earth,
: (?) sent to hoe in Heaven.
: To the left of this marker is an obelisk for Alfred Barton, son of J&A Bowlby
: as previously noted.
: The front right corner of the barrier abuts a large monument for Hiram Young,
: and the left front corner abuts an obelisk I was unable to read due to
: encroaching mold or fungus.
