CARLETON, CAPT. MONROE RICHARD "DICK"
Lansing
Formerly of East Lansing
Capt. Carleton was born in Detroit on October 8, 1917 to Edna and Monroe P. Carleton and died in his home December 27, 1989. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth Evelyn; 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Lynne of San Diego, CA, Douglas and Vicki, Gordon and Lori, all of Lansing; 1 brother and wife H. Eugene and Katie of Dallas TX; 2 sisters, Mary and Charles Chapman of S. Yarra, Australia, Janet and Robert Shaffer of Loveland, CO; stepmother, Naomi B. Carleton of Bradenton, FL; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Until his retirement, Dick was a Deck Officer on Great Lakes freighters and tankers, and had spent one year as a St. Clair river pilot for foreign ships entering the lakes. During World War II he served as Master of a rescue ship for the Army Transport Corps in the South Pacific. He was a life member of Evergreen Lodge #9 F& AM in St. Clair and of Cornell Marysville Chapter #93 O.E.S. He was also a duel member, past Master, and current Secretary of East Lansing Lodge #480 F& AM and an office [sic] of Red Cedar Chapter #434 O.E.S. in East Lansing. Dick also served as head of food service for Caravan Circus each spring, and as Secretary of Mid-Mich. Scottish Rite Club. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 4 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman East Chapel, East Lansing with the Rev. Dr. Mary A. Hansen, Associate Pastor of Peoples Church officiating. Masonic services will be provided by East Lansing Lodge #480 F& AM. The family will receive friends at the Chapel Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
