HAMPTON PIONEER IS DEAD
Venerable Wm. Bowlby Passes Away at the Great Age of 90 Years-Funeral on Memorial Day.
Memorial day in Hampton will be made unusually impressive by the funeral of Wm. Bowlby, a pioneer of that section, the oldest man for miles around and a citizen who had for many years taken a leading part for the public exercises each Memorial day. He was on honorary member of the G.A.R. Post there and was usually chief marshal of the parade.
Mr. Bowlby, who was born on April 3, 1820, and had recently celebrated his 90th birthday, died last Thursday

at one o'clock a.m. He had been failing for some time and gerneral debility is assigned as the cause of death.
His parents were the pioneer Bowlbys of this section. When he was two years old they moved to Ithaca, N.Y., remaining there until William was 13 years old. Then they moved back to New Jersey, he following them on horseback through a country that was then little more than a wilderness.
Mr. Bowlby was twice married. His first wife was Rebecca Weller, and five children, all still living, were born to them. They are: Mrs. Lee Rodenbough of Ludlow, Richard of Rowlands Mills, Samuel, Peter and Wm. H. of Hampton. Mrs. Lydia Slater of New Brunswick and Peter Bowlby of Hampton are sister and brother respectively. His second wife was Mrs. Wm. Rounsaville of New Hampton, whom he married on Dec. 12, 1883. They had no children. Besides the widow and children he leaves ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He held several local offices during his life, among them being freeholder, commissioner of appeals and surveyor of highways. He had always been a Democrat.
Mr. Bowlby was a good supporter and worker for the Musconetcong Valley Presbyterian church so long as his health permitted. He was an elder for several years, holding this office (I believe this to be the word at)at the time of his death.
The Hampton G.A.R. Post accompanied the remains to the cemetery, following the funeral on Monday.
