Obituary, Daily Chief Apr. 18, 1918:
MEETSDEATH UNDER AUTO.
Joseph N. Bowlby was suffocated Sunday at Tilbury, Ontario, when his automobile skidded down an embankment and turned turtle, pinning him underneath, says the Findlay Republican. He had driven his five-passenger car to Ontario for a car license and was accompanied by another man. The accident happened when they were on their way home, and both men were killed.Bowlby was an experienced and careful driver and the exact manner of the accident is only conjecture. The body arrived Tuesday evening on the Toledo and Ohio Central accompanied by Mrs. Bowlby, and was taken to the Renshler mortuary where the funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon.
Joseph N. Bowlby was 41 years and 5 days old, and was born at Carey, his father being William Bowlby. He came to Findlay when a lad of nineteen, going to Canada twelve years ago, where he has been engaged in the oil fields. He married Miss Myrtle Woolsey, of Findlay. Rev. C.H. Gatchell, who officiated at the burial service Thursday officiated at the wedding. There were no children. There are three brothers and one sister surviving.
The family came to the home of the Findlay brother, R.D. Bowlby, of 205 Elm street, Wednesday. Bert Bowlby arrived from Florence, Colo.;Orville from Carey, and Mrs. Emma O'Brien from Detroit.
Despite the inconsistencies, this is presumably Joseph W. Bowlby, son of James A. Bowlby and Amanda Grindle. The Findlay brother RD Bowlby is undoubtedly my great grandfather Roland D. Bowlby. I am curious about Bert Bowlby however; is this the Uncle Bert my mother thought her brother may have named after? I don't know where he fits in.
Cemetery records indicate Joseph W. Bowlby was buried 4/17/1918 in block 25,lot 336 #1, Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay OH. I have seen and photographed the monument there, which reads:
J.W. BOWLBY
1877-1918
There is no marker for Myrtle, who cemetery records indicate was buried next to him in block 25, lot 336 #2 on 12/29/1930.
I will scan this obit and forward it to anyone who wants it.
