Mrs. H.J. Whalen Dies: Wife of the Pastor of the local Baptist Church
Mrs. Aline Mitchell Whalen, wife of Dr. H.J. Whalen, pastor of the Baptist Church, died at the Nason Hospital, Roaring Springs, Pa., at midnight Friday night. Mrs. Whalen underwent an operation at that hospital at 9 o'clock Friday morning.
Mrs. Whalen was the daughter of Captain P.C. and Frances Bowlby Mitchell and was born at Odessa, N.Y., October 30, 1874. She was a graduate of Keuka College, N.Y., and married December 3, 1895. Dr. Whalen and his family came from New Castle to Greensburg in September, 1916. Mrs. Whalen took an active part in church work and on the Sunday before she was taken ill, sang in the choir. She played the piano at the prayer meeting Wednesday night. Mrs. Whalen was a director of the Women's Missionary Society of Pennsylvania.
Besides her husband the following children survive: Frances Bowlby Whalen, a junior at Western College, Oxford, O.; Henry, age 8; Russell, age 6, and Miss Marguerite daughter of Annie Sackett Whalen.
Funeral services from the home, 425 Chestnut Street, at 7:30 o'clock Monday, in charge of Rev. Noah Fehl, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, Irwin, and Dr. S.J. Crowe pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, New Castle, who preached the sermon. Dr. W.J. McMichael, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, and Dr. G.P. Atwell, of the Westminster Church assisted in the services. Internment Wednesday at Mt. Upton, N.Y., in Dr. Whalen's family plot, and beside the grave of Annie S. Whalen, mother of Marguerite. It was at this place Dr. Whalen began his ministry.
Note: Dr. Whalen's first wife, Annie Sackett, died about 2 weeks after giving birth to their daughter, Marguerite. Frances Aline Mitchell was his second wife.
