ELEVENTH GENERATION

893. Samuel Barker BOWLBY (4981) (760) was born on 27 Nov 1804 in Sussex Co., NJ. He was a farmer in 1860 in Somerset Twp., Jackson Co., IL.(4982) He died on 18 Nov 1866. He was buried in Halladay Cem., Murphysboro, Jackson Co., IL.

From the Illinois census it can be determined that Samuel and Abigail spent at least fourteen years of their married life in Ohio before moving on to Illinois, and that they came to Illinois less than three years before 1860. The 1860 census for Jackson Co., IL., Twp. 8, Range 2 West gives: Samuel BOWLBY, 48, m., N. J.; Abigal, 48, f., N. J.; Samuel, 17, m., OH; Elisha, 13, m., OH; Thomas 3, m., OH. Mrs. Kelly says that Samuel and Abigail owned a farm near Harrison's mines near Murphysboro, IL, that they were buried in Halladay Cem. there. She also gives the names of their twelve children. Evidently the older children had left home before the 1860 census.

The 1860 census for Somerset Twp., Jackson Co., IL. shows the following:
781
BOWLBY, Samuel
56 Farmer NJ
Abigail 48 NJ
Samuel 17 OH
Elisha 13 OH
Lavanda 11 OH
Martha 9 OH
William 7 OH
Thomas 3 OH

Apparently made a mistake in typing the age for Samuel.

He was married to Abigail BOWLBY (daughter of Samuel BOWLBY and Johanna PARKHURST) in Warren Co., OH. (4983)

Samuel married his second cousin, Abigail BOWLBY (10). Samuel's grandfather and Abigail's father were brothers. Her family moved in 1828 to Fayette Co., PA; his family had settled in Somerset, an adjoining county, before 1820. Mrs. Cordelia KELLY says that they were married in Bethney, OH, which is no longer on the map. It was probably a settlement in Warren Co. Abigail BOWLBY (4984) (760) was born about 1812 in Newton, Sussex Co., NJ. She was buried in Halladay Cem., Murphysboro, Jackson Co., IL.

Abigail was probably born at Newton, Sussex Co., NJ. where her brother, H. E. BOWLBY, was born. According to the census report of 1850, she was born around 1812 which would be two years after her parents were married. Her parents moved to Fayette Co., PA. around 1828 where she was reared near the family of her father's nephew, Samuel Barker BOWLBY, who were settled in the adjoining county of Somerset. She married her second cousin in Ohio, probably in Warren County where two of her brothers married. Her family of twelve children were reared in Ohio before moving to a farm near DeSoto, IL. Since there is a generation difference from her husband, her life and descendants have been considered in this work under the name of her husband. Samuel Barker BOWLBY and Abigail BOWLBY had the following children:
