Samuel served in the Mexican War and was a lst Lt. in the 7th Wis. Volunteer Inf. Co. F., from 1861 - 1862 during the Civil War. He massed together a good fortune by starting and managing the hotel at Bloomington from 1862 - 1866. the flour mill for ten years and then into the hardware business. He owned the brick block in Bloomington and was worth about $35,000.00.
