Day Has Drawn To A Close April 27, 1914 And Hugh Calvin Clements
Closes His Eyes In Eternal Sleep

The death of Hugh C. Clements at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry
E. Southwick, 5 miles west of the city, at 3:10 Saturday afternoon,
wrote the word "finis" at the end of an unusually long and unusually
useful life. He lacked less than 5 months of being 90 years of age.
He raised a numerous family of highly respected childdren, his voice
and vote were always for what he considered to be right. He reaped
the reward of honorable endeavor, and his influence will long be felt,
not only among his descendants, but in the community in which he was
for so long an upright model citizen.

Mr. Clements had gone with his daughter, Mrs. Southwick, from their
farm home to East Lynn on Tuesday of last week. Mrs. Southwick had
gone into a store to do some trading, leaving her father in the
automobile in front of the store. His little grandchild, Ethel
Clements, 6 years, who was going home from school, stopped to talk
with grandpa, and while she was talking to him the stroke of paralysis
that ended his life a few days later came upon him, and the little
girl could not understand why her grandfather did not answer her. A
physician was called, and on his advice the afflicted man was taken
home, where all that was possible to be done for him was done, but
without avail. He recovered consciousness and was able to recognize
those around him, but could not say "yes" and "no". The candle of
life flickered for a few days and then went out.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Southwick home at 1:30
o'clock this afternoon by Rev. Edwin L. Tobie, Pastor of the East Lynn
M.E. Church, followed by interment by the side of his wife in Floral
Hill Cemetery.

Hugh Calvin Clements was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky, Sept. 8,
1824, and came to Tazewell County, Illinois, in 1849. He was united
in marriage there with Sarah M. Bowlby, by whom he was the father of
11 children, 7 of whom are living, and all present at the funeral. He
came with his wife and children to the vicinity of East Lynn 32 years
ago, and lived there until the end. Mrs. Clements died July 26,
1895. The children, in order of their ages are, Myra, wife of David
Poundstone of Grand Ridge, Illinois; Anna, wife of James Gibbons,
west of Hoopeston; Mrs. Ida Kiner of Marseilles, Ill.; Florence,
wife of James Cranshaw, southwest of this city; Mattie, wife of Henry
Southwick, 5 miles west of town; John Clements, living on the home
farm near East Lynn, and Louella, wife of Harry R. Smith of Clarence,
Ill. Besides his children, he leaves 34 grandchildren and 20
great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother and a sister at
Carthage, Missouri.

Hugh C. Clements was a farmer all his life, and he made it pay. At
his death he was the owner of a half section of fine land a mile and a
half west of EAst Lynn and 235 acres a mile and a quarter southeast of
Francisville, Indiana.
