William Francis Swain was born on Halloween day. October 31. 1867 in Madison
County. Indiana , His parents were James Francis Swain 'b. 1840 in Indiana and
Sarah Elizabeth (Perry) Swai n b. 1844 in Madison Co. Indiana, His mother was
the daughter of Andrew Perry b. 1812 in ID a nd Sarah Marsh b. 1817 OH. The 1870
Missouri census is the oldest record to trace our Swain f amily at this time.
James Francis Swain died in Mercer Co, Missouri when William was still a t a
young age. Elizabeth remarried before 1878, Joseph Shook (1824-1917). Elizabeth
died i n 1882 leaving William and his sisters in the care of Mr. Shook. William,
age 15 and his sist er Sarah Emma age 18, were sent to Antelope Co. Nebraska
to live with their uncle Samuel Perr y. William also had a sister named Cristina
b 1866, who probably died as a child. His half -s isters. Ada Shook b 1879
and Katie Shook b 1881 stayed in the home of their father, Joseph , Shook. William's
Uncle Samuel Perry married Ella Bowlsby, in 1882 a sister to Emma Rache l Bowlsby.
It was at the Perry farm that William met his future wife Emma Rachel Bowlsby.
Emm a Rachel Bowlsby was born 5 Jan 1874 in Ceder Valley community, Antelope
County, Nebraska. Sh e was the ninth of eleven children born to Emmanuel Parkhill
Bowlsby b. 1829 and Lydia Ann (T hompson) Bowlsby (b. 1834). The Bowlsby family
had moved from Wisconsin to Nebraska in 1873 . William and Emma were married
on June 3. I 891, in Cedar County, Nebraska where the first n ine children were
born, except for Clifton who appears to be born in Missouri. where they we re
living at the time of the 1900 U.S. census. Manuel P. Bowlsby and Lydia Ann[Thompson]
wit nessed the marriage. Emma is remembered as saying in a joking way that "she
must have been c razy to marry William after practically growing up in the same
house with him.â William and E mma remained in Nebraska until
1908, when they crossed the planes to the new state of Oklahom a in two covered
wagons. Emma was pregnant with Leonard at the time. Leonard was born in 3 S
ep 1908 in Oklahoma, so the family must have made the trip sometime in the early
months of 19 08. There is no evidence that William or Emma ever saw any of their
family again, with the ex ception of the children of William's sister Emma.
The Swain family settled in Caddo County, Oklahoma for a short time, by the l910
census, th e family was in Grady County, Oklahoma. Where they lived in a number
of locations. Pocasset , Amber and Minco. Emma was pregnant with twins after
coming to OK, but lost them due to a m iscarriage. It was here that the last
three children were born. William. either farmed rente d land or sharecropped
while in Grady County. During the years in Grady County, the older chi ldren
of this family, began to marry, Stella married George Stover on 13 Sep 1913
and Lizzi e married Alfred Francis Stover on 22 Jan 1915. Sometime around 1917,
the family moved to a 1 60-acre farm that William had purchased in Seminole County,
OK between Maud and Harjo. The h ousehold goods, farm implements and animals
were shipped by train to the Maud, OK depot. Th e family moved into a log cabin
that was on the Farm, this would be their home for almost tw o years. William
added another room to the log cabin from hand cut timber. After two years Wi
lliam tore-down the log cabin and moved a house to wherethe log cabin had stood,
with the hel p of his sons and a group of neighbours.
During this time Earl joined the United States Army Air Guards and sailed to
France to figh t in World War I. He was in a severe train accident that took
many lives and crippled him. Af ter many months in hospitals he was allowed to
return home. His parents and siblings met hi m at the Train station in Harjo.
A year and a half after Earl was discharged from the army, h e married Medy [Howarth]
Cole on 16 Nov 1920. Much later, after his parent's deaths, Sandy wo uld be drafted
into the United States Army for a short time because of World War II. He was
s tationed in Florida.
In 1921 a flood destroyed what seemed to be one of the best crops that William
had farmed. H e tried to make a loan against the next years crops at the bank
in Maud, Oklahoma, but was un successful. William was forced to sale his farm
to pay his creditors. William left his famil y with Stella[Swain] Stover and
her family and travelled to Oklahoma City to Look for work an d a home for his
family. He rented a house on SW 20th and Agnew in Okla. City. It was here t
hat Leonard became very ill. He died on 20 Nov. 1924 at 16 years old from a
ruptured append ix in the Oklahoma
General Hospital . He was buried in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Oklahoma city, OK.
The years in Ok lahoma City saw marriages of four of William and Emma's sons,
Bill married Jessie Cleo Hensle y on 21 Sep 1923. Pete married Etha (surname
unknown) in 1923. He was to later remarry to Rub y Rosier on 21 Nov 1935. Quil
married Ruth Altana and Sandy married Mary (surname unknown). W illiam was not
able to keep the house because of back taxes. In the early years of this centu
ry individuals did not know how much the taxes would be until they came to collect.
The amoun t
was staggering and for this man who made a modest living, it was overwhelming.
He moved his f amily which by now consisted of Emma, Willemma and Golda to Wapanucka,
Oklahoma. Where Willia m bought another farm. In 1929, America was brought to
its knees by the fall of Wall Street a nd the Great Depression that was to last
until the beginning of World War II and in 1930 cam e the drought and in 1932
the Dust Bowl. Oklahoma was one of the
hardest hit areas in the country economic as well as physically. William was
unable to pay hi s taxes because of the poor crop conditions and lost his farm,
by now all of their children h ad homes and families of their own. Willemma married
John Holland on 29 May 1929 and Golda m arried Robert Gains Owen on 2 I Sep
1931. In 1931 William and Emma lost another child. Stell a died at the Oklahoma
General Hospital of cancer of the stomach on August 13. 1931. She ha d been married
twice, once to George Stover and the second time to Tom Southerland. At the ti
me of her death
she was divorced from her second husband. She also left two daughters, Catherine
and Willemma . She was buried at the Fairlawn Cemetery under the name of Stella
Stover. It was within the se years of so much unhappiness that William and Emma
separated. The exact reason for the sep aration is not known, there was no divorce.
William rented a small farm, near Binger and Coge r Oklahoma and Emma lived in
Verden, Oklahoma with her son Sandy, The last few months of 193 5 she moved back
to Oklahoma City and early 1936. William contracted a very bad cough that th
e local doctors attributed to his continuous smoking of a pipe. In February of
1936 he went t o visit Golda and her
family who lived in Oklahoma City During this visit William became very sick
and was put to b ed. For the next three weeks Golda. Bill and his wife Cleo sat
up with him around the clock . William slipped into a Coma on the night of March
11tho His family took him to the Oklahom a General Hospital here he died the
next morning, 12 Mar 1936 at 9:30 am. It was discovered t hat he had suffered
from a severe kidney infection and bronchitis. The Street & Draper Funer
al Home handled arrangements for the funeral. His funeral was held on March 15th
at the Secon d Pentecostal Church on SW 24th St. and Agnew St. (William. had
helped build this church buil ding some years before.) A "Brother"
Phillips conducted the services. William was laid to re st in the Fairlawn Cemetery
not far from his daughter Stella. Emma suffered a fatal stroke i n her home at
7:30 pm on 19 April 1937. She had been in good spirits that day but had compla
ined about not feeling well, She was sitting on the edge of her bed when she
suffered the 9t roke. She died approximately at 10:00 pm. Emma's funeral was
at theChurch of the First Born ( Pentecostal Holiness on Capitol HiIl in Oklahoma
City on the 25th of April. The funeral was a rranged through the Ben V. Hunter
