482. John Herod BOWLBY ⁽³⁾⁽²⁹²⁰⁾⁽⁵⁾⁽⁶⁾⁽⁷⁾⁽⁸⁾ was born on 21 Feb 1798 in Monongalia County, Virginia.⁽²⁹²¹⁾ He was born just a few days after his parents arrived in Monongalia
County, Virginia. He died on 11 May 1884 in Monongalia County, Virginia.⁽²⁹²²⁾ He was a drover in Baltimore, Washington, and Philadephia.⁽²⁹²³⁾ He was a built and owned a steam mill and saw mill.⁽²⁹²⁴⁾ John was commissioned 1st lieutenant, Virginia Militia, in 1819, and
in 1840, he was commissioned Colonel of the 140th Regiment Virginia
Militia. He volunteered for the Mexican War, but was refused because
of his advanced age. He served many years as justice of the peace and
was elected to the House of Delegates in 1843. He was a staunch
Democrate.

He was married to Elizabeth STEPHENS on 23 Oct 1823 in Whitely Creek.⁽²⁹²⁵⁾⁽²⁹²⁶⁾ Elizabeth STEPHENS⁽²⁹²⁷⁾⁽⁵⁾⁽⁶⁾⁽⁷⁾⁽⁸⁾ was born on 26 Dec 1801.⁽²⁹²⁸⁾ She died on 13 Apr 1882.⁽²⁹²⁹⁾ The Bowlby family Bible records published in January of 1973 issue of
GENEALOGICAL MAGAZINE OF NEW JERSEY gives her father as "James
Stevens, Dr. of Greene Co., Pa. on Whitely Creek." However, Watkins'
HISTORY OF NEBRASKA says that Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward (b.
1763) and Hannah (Woodward) Stephens, early settlers on Whitely Creek,
Greene County, Pennsylvania. The latter is confirmed by a Green
County deed of 13 Sept. 1847, where James Stephens and John Bowlby
acted as executors of Edward Stephens. John Herod BOWLBY and Elizabeth STEPHENS had the following children:

1232 i. Samuel C. BOWLBY⁽⁵⁾⁽⁶⁾⁽⁷⁾⁽⁸⁾ was born about 1824 in Monongalia County, Virginia.⁽²⁹³⁰⁾ He died on 24 Oct 1841 in Monogalia County, Virginia, now West Virginia.⁽²⁹³¹⁾⁽²⁹³²⁾ He was the first to die of typhoid fever in the county.
