Wiley's HISTORY OF MONONGALIA COUNTY WEST VIRGINIA states that James
was educated as a lawyer in New Jersey. He inherited a sixth part of
his grandfather's lands in 1782. Probably because of his
grandfather's bequest, and the fact that James was established in
Virginia by 1815, his father's will left James a minimal bequest of ]
'twenty dollare."...in full of his Claim." He was married to Lydia
CARHART about 1787 in Mansfield, Sussex County, New Jersey.
(1420)(1421)
(1422)(1423)
(1424)(1425) The following
is a quotation from Wiley's history concerning James
Bowlby: "In 1797, he came with his family to the Forks of Cheat, and
remained there until 1798, when he crossed Bald Hill in the first
wagon ever driven across that country, and settled on the land which
he previously bought from James Polloc, on the headwaters of
Robinson's Run." The north line ofJames' property is said to have
lain along the Mason Dixon Line. It was here that James and Lydia
reared seven children. The spring of 1842 was a fateful season for
James' family; on 12 March, his wife died; on 25 March, his oldest
daughter died; on 28 March, James wrote his will, and died two months
later.
It has also been said that most of his children settled in Richland
County, Ohio. Lydia CARHART

(5)(6)
(7)(8) was born on 28 Oct 1769
in Sussex County, New Jersey.(1427)
She died on 12 Mar 1842 in Monongalia County, West Virginia.
(1428) Lydia Carhart's genealogy is well documented in GENEALOGICAL
RECORD OF
THE DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS CARHART OF CORNWALL ENGLAND by Mary E.
Dusenberg. Her family is delineated also in Virkus' ABRIDGED
COMPENDIUM OF AMERICAN GENEALOGY, Volume III. She was a daughter of
