Died of maltreatment Sept. 22 at age 43 in a prison near Tangchow at the hands of a Tartar general who had captured him. He was a special correspondent covering a British delegation to China, which was also captured. He had distinguished himself with stories of a steamship sinking earlier in the year. He was buried on 17 Oct 1860 in Pekin China.⁽⁴⁵⁸³⁾
