Dr. W.W. Bowlby died on Saturday morning last, about ten o'clock, the immediate cause of his death being heart disease. he was in the fifty-first year of his age. Since last Spring he had made his home at the "American House," in this place, in close proximity to the residence of his widowed mother and other relatives. Though of robust appearance and elegant physique, he had for months past been suffering from shortness of breath, insomnia, and a general nervous affection, which gradually grew upon him and culminated in the derangement of his mental faculties. In June he took a trip to Saratoga and the Adirondacks, in the company of a party of friends. He returned to this place on Sunday, August 22nd, in the care of an attendant, weak and exhausted by travel, and with manifest signs of brain trouble.

From this time he was confined to this room at the "American," under the constant attention and care of his friends. his condidtion, both mentally and physically, gradually but surely became worse. Dr. John S. Cook, in consultation with Dr. Taylor, of New York City, advised his removal to the Morris Plains Asylum, where he could the better receive special care
and treatment. he went to the asylum on September 2d. The Doctor was no better from that time, and on Saturday, the 11th instant, suddenly and without a struggle passed away. The funeral took place from the residence of Mrs. Sarah Bowlby, his sister-in-law, on Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock, the Rev. Dr. C.D. Nott, of Washington, officiating. the interment was made in the family plot in Union Cemetery. Members of the family, and particular friends to a considerable number, were in attendance at the funeral, among whom was his bethrothed, Miss Gertrude J. Chamberlin, of New York City.

Dr. Bowlby was the son of Samuel C. and Selinda Bowlby. He was born March 7th, 1836, in the old William Warne house, near Brass Castle, a short distance from Washington, in this county. He received a common school eduation, and upon attaining manhood went to Newark and studied medicine with Dr. Dougherty. He attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City and graduated from that institution in 1861 with high
honors, and was twice mentioned in the list of prizes.

He practiced medicine in Newark for several months before enlisting in September 1861 as First Assistant Surgeon of the Twenty-sixth New Jersey Infantry. About tihs time he married Miss Elizabeth Stark, of New York City, the fruits of which marriage was a daughter, Jennie, who died of consumption in this town in the fall of 1882, aged twenty years. In August, 1863,
he was mustered in the Second New Jersey Calvalry as Assistant Surgeon, where he remained on duty until November of the same year, when, at the request of Governor Joel parker, he was honorably discharged, and joined the Third New Jersey Cavalry as Surgeon.

He was a lover of the sports of fishing and gunning and spent a portion of each season in the fields and among the hills of this, his native county. His acquaintance with the prominent persons of the country was large. He had traveled extensively and was always capable of entertaining his friends with the details of his experience and observation.

The death of Dr. Bowlby, in the prime of his life, is a surprise to all except his nearest friends. In his demise the world of mankind has lost one of its best representatives, and his friends a generous friend indeed and in need.
