Both of Syren's parents died when she was seven, so she and her
siblings were raised by her uncle and aunt, Samuel C. and Louisa
(Bowlby) Smith.

She was married to Samuel Philip SHAFER on 3 Feb 1864 in Edwardsville, Warren County, Ohio.⁽⁷⁴¹⁵⁾⁽⁷⁴¹⁶⁾ Samuel Philip SHAFER⁽⁷⁴¹⁷⁾⁽⁸¹⁶⁾⁽⁶⁾⁽⁷⁾⁽⁸⁾ was born on 14 Nov 1841 in Centerville, Ohio.⁽⁷⁴¹⁸⁾ He died on 19 Nov 1928 in Fitzgerald, Georgia.⁽⁷⁴¹⁹⁾
He served in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865 in Company E., 17th
Regiment, Ohio Infantry. He was injured 20 September, 1863, when run
over by an artillery wagon. He was a shoemaker and later in the
1890's owned "Shafer Hill Fruit Farm" near Mulberry, Ohio. Samuel
lived in Butlerville, Ohio and Lynchberg, Ohio, and east of Milford
Ohio, 1884, and Irwin County, Georgia, about 1900, and Fitgerald,
Georgia, 1904. Syren SMITH and Samuel Philip SHAFER had the following children:

Caring for her parents in their old age, she never married. She was a
school teacher in Georgia. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
3326 iv. Samuel Clyde SHAFER⁽⁸¹⁶⁾⁽⁶⁾⁽⁷⁾ ⁽⁸⁾ was born on 4 May 1877.⁽⁷⁴²³⁾ He died on 20 Oct 1879.⁽⁷⁴²⁴⁾
