He served in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865 in Company E., 17th
Regiment, Ohio Infantry. He was injured 20 September, 1863, when run
over by an artillery wagon. He was a shoemaker and later in the
1890's owned "Shafer Hill Fruit Farm" near Mulberry, Ohio. Samuel
lived in Butlerville, Ohio and Lynchberg, Ohio, and east of Milford
Ohio, 1884, and Irwin County, Georgia, about 1900, and Fitgerald,
Georgia, 1904. Syren SMITH and Samuel Philip SHAFER had the following children:
