3100. Lillie Mae BOWLBY (3343) (805)(6) (12412)(7) (8) was born on 21 Mar 1866 in Olney, Richland County, Illinois. (12413) She died on 6 Mar 1946 in Irving, Montgomery County, Illinois.(12414) She was also known as "Lily".(12415)

She was married to John MARTIN on 11 Feb 1889 in Olney, Richland County, Illinois.(12416) John MARTIN(3343) (805)(12417) (12418)(6) (7)(8) was born on 2 Sep 1865 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio.(12419) He died on 19 Jun 1942.(12420) He was buried in Irving, Montgomery County, Illinois. Lillie's grandson, Glen Martin, told Connee Speiser that Lillie Mae
"was staying with or working for the Shaw's at Moroa when she met JOHN
MARTIN, her husband to be." They were married at the home of her
parents in Olney on 11 February, 1889. John was the third child of
William and Susannah (Grosser) Martin, born 2 September, 1865,
Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio, died 19 June, 1941.

When John was seven years old, he moved with his family to Effingham
County, Illinois, possibly to a farm seven miles south of Effingham.
Glen Martin said his father Charles told of his grandfather, John
Martin, leaving home as a young man, "One morning he went out to feed
the mules and went in the south door of the barn and out the north
door and kept going." Families were large in those days and many
young men set out to make a place of their own in the world. John
moved up into the Maroa, Illinois area where he rented eighty acres of
land. It was here that he met Lillie. In 1904, after the birth of
three daughters and a son, they moved from the Maroa area to
Assumption. They lived here for a short time before moving to Witt,
where they bought 320 acres in Witt and Irving Townships, Montogomery
County, Illinois. Their two-story house on the edge of Witt was still
standing in 1994, and was occupied by the widow of their grandson,
Glen Martin.

Like other women of her time, Lillie not only raised her children, but
did sewing, raised chickens and gathered eggs, canned, and did other
household duties. She took a deep interest in her church work and
spent many hours quilting.
