Thomas bought farm land near Beatystown where he became a successful
farmer and opened three hematite ore mines. His biography appears in
James P. Snell's HISTORY OF SUSSEX AND WARREN COUNTIES NEW jERSEY,
1881.

He was married to Fanny CLAWSON on 18 Feb 1830 in Hackettstown, New Jersey.⁽¹⁴⁸⁴⁾⁽³¹¹⁹⁾⁽³¹²⁰⁾ Fanny CLAWSON⁽⁸⁰⁷⁾⁽⁸⁰⁸⁾⁽⁷⁾⁽⁸⁾ was born on 3 Mar 1812.⁽¹⁴⁸⁴⁾⁽³¹²¹⁾⁽³¹²²⁾ She was buried in Hackettstown Cemetery, New Jersey.⁽³¹²³⁾ Thomas SHIELDS Jr. and Fanny CLAWSON had the following children:
