He was 1st sergeant, Company C., 42 Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, before he was promoted 22 Oct 1862, to 2nd Lieutenant, Company C., 23 Regiment, command by Colonel James A. Garfield, who later became President of the United States. In 1878, James moved to Canon City, Colorado, and secured work as a clerk in the post office. He later served four years as postmaster in Canon City. Later, he and his son-in-law, F.P. Smith, built up one of the largest mercantile establishments in the county.
