ELEVENTH GENERATION

1589. Mahlon Iliff BOWLBY (7746) (3632)(7) (8) was born on 13 Mar 1844 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. (7747) He died on 25 Feb 1901 in Tipton County, Indiana. (7748) He was buried in Sharpsville Cemetery, Sharpsville, Indiana. (7749) At the age of 17, when the Civil War began, Mahlon enlisted on 18
September 1861 and saw continuous service in Company K, 37th Regiment,
Indiana Volunteer Infantry, until 17 October 1864 when he received an
honorable discharge. His great-grandson, Myron Bowlby, tells the
family story that Mahlon left for the war unannounced one morning
after taking the cows to pasture and returned from the war without
ceremony by bringing the cows in from pasture one evening.

A Tipton County history states that immediately after the war, he
rented a farm and lived for several years in Caldwell County,
Missouri, then returned to Rush County, Indiana for a few years. He
eventually moved to Tipton County, Indiana and bought 80 acres which
he successfully farmed for a number of years. This move was possibly
motivated by the presence there of his uncle William Bowlby. His
aunt, Olivia (Bowlby) Davis is also said to have lived nearby in
Kokomo, Indiana. Mahlon sold his farm and bought 80 acres southwest
of Kokomo in Howard County where he lived until his death.

He was married to Rebecca Jane SWEET on 5 Dec 1867 in Rush County, Ohio. (7750)(7751) Rebecca Jane SWEET(3) (3636)(3637) (6) (3632)(7) (8) was born on 3 Dec 1834 in Rush County, Indiana.
